Dr. Makaziwe Mandela – Global Thought Leader, Businesswoman, and Advocate for Social Change

Dr. Makaziwe Mandela is a distinguished businesswoman, academic, and advocate for social justice. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, she is the eldest daughter of Evelyn Mase and Nelson Mandela. Growing up in Soweto, she witnessed firsthand the challenges of apartheid, shaping her lifelong commitment to equity, empowerment, and transformation.

Her academic journey began at Fort Hare University, where she earned a BA in Social Work, followed by an Honours Degree in Sociology from the University of Natal. In 1984, she was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Foreign Scholarship and Fulbright Distinguished Fellowship Award to pursue a Master’s in Sociology and a PhD in Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, USA.

Dr. Mandela has built a dynamic career spanning corporate leadership, academia, and philanthropy. She has held directorships at multinational companies such as Nestlé SA and played a key role in Nozala, a women’s investment group, leveraging financial resources to uplift and empower women in South Africa. She has also held senior leadership roles at the Development Bank of Southern Africa and Spoornet, focusing on corporate strategy and human capital development.

In addition to her corporate and academic contributions, Dr. Mandela has served on the boards of Rand Water Services, Myriad Medical, and Envirosev. She has also worked as a consultant in training development and life skills, championing self-empowerment initiatives.

Today, Dr. Mandela is the Chairperson of House of Mandela, a business she co-founded with her daughter, Tukwini Mandela, in 2010, celebrating African heritage and storytelling through enterprise. She is also a director of the House of Mandela Family Foundation, established in 2017, which works to improve the livelihoods of underserved communities while advocating globally on critical social issues, including HIV/AIDS, education, healthcare, agriculture, women’s empowerment, and renewable energy.
